Sisterhood

Since 1916, women of our congregation have joined together to create a Jewish Sisterhood in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Temple Sinai's Sisterhood, called the Ladies Aid Society, was organized by Julie Marx in 1916. Twenty-eight Jewish women formed a sisterhood to aid both the community and the synagogue. One of their biggest achievements, was their purchase of the synagogue's pipe organ, the first ever installed in a house of worship in Lake Charles. Later, the Ladies Aid Society founded a chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) which focused on helping the larger community. Working on both charitable and cultural projects, the local NCJW chapter founded a Sick Loan Shelf, volunteered at St. Patrick Hospital, established a foreign film series, and helped to start a pilot French language program in the local schools. It is with great pride that we rejoice in the history of our synagogue's Sisterhood and continue our efforts to better the community of Lake Charles.

The Temple Sinai Sisterhood is a diverse group of women, from working professionals to stay-at-home moms, ranging in age. We are single, single parents, married, married with children, divorced and widowed.

If you are not already a member of sisterhood – we invite you to join!
